Long before the Jonas Brothers, there were the Tiongco Brothers — siblings Jun, Emil, and Arthur — who achieved pop star status because of their harmonious blending of voices. Belonging to the prominent Tiongco clan of Sta. Rosa, they brought Philippine music to the world with performances in Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and the US.

They were star performers at the opening of the Tokyo Hilton, the first Filipino entertainers to sing at the iconic Sydney Opera House, performed for ARAMCO guests in Saudi Arabia, and gave a command performance for the King of Jordan, and were part of the Baliksaya Troupe sent by the national government to tour the US and Canada. They were named Ambassadors of Goodwill and were elevated to the country’s Tinig Hall of Fame.

While they have traveled extensively, their roots remain in their hometown, and here they share their remarkable musical and cultural tradition with us. This is their Sta. Rosa. This is their SM.

Music is very much part of the tradition of Sta. Rosa and our family. We would say that Sta. Rosa has the best brass band, as well as many rondallas and singers.

We also come from a family of musicians and singers. Our great grandmother, Maria Carpena, was the Zarzuela Queen of her time and the first Filipino recording artist of RCA Victor in 1912. Our father, Fernando Zavalla Tiongco was a notable piano and saxophone player of his time, and until his retirement, was the musical director of the Ateneo Glee Club. Our mother, Teodora Medina-Tiongco sang in Zarzuelas. Everyone in the family can sing.

We were able to develop our singing talents through constant practice and exposure. There were many opportunities to perform brought about by the rapid growth of Sta. Rosa, and these helped us in improving our voices.

If we would bring guests around Santa Rosa, we would bring them to the Santa Rosa de Lima Parish Church, which was built around 1796. It is known for its hexagonal belfry with a globe and its intricately carved doors.

We were all baptized in this church, and have been singing here at every Misa de Gallo during Christmas time for the past 54 years.

One important stop for our guests would be the town plaza, which was our playground when we were young. It is also the place where we started singing and playing the guitar.

Tolentino was born on July 2, 1959. Having heard the great Charlie Parker at the age of 16, Tots decided that the saxophone was to be his chosen instrument. He studied flute under Prof. Eric Barcelo at the University of the Philippines Conservatory of Music in 1977 to 1978. He continued his studies on soprano, alto and tenor saxophones under Joseph Viola at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Graduated magna cum laude in 1982, Tolentino has been a leading session musician on the Philippine concert scene from 1984 to 1990.

Tolentino also worked with several popular Philippine artists like Lea Salonga, Martin Nievera, Janno Gibs and Gary Valenciano. Although his musical origin was in the field of pop music and pop ballads, Tolentino pursued his passion for Jazz and emerged as a formidable solo artist. He release three albums between 1990 and 1993: namely; Tots Tolentino (1990), Inah (1991) and Color Real (1993) which highlight his saxophone skills.

His albums were critically-acclaimed. Tots Tolentino bagged a Gold Record Award and Ina won Best Jazz Recording in the 1991 Awit Awards. He also fronted for the Jazz group Buhay, which were composed of Wowee Posadas, Mar Dizon and Meong Pacana. The group has toured Asia and the US. His sound, described by critics as" passionate and energetic" as well as "articulate and authoritative" was strong enough to catch the ear of Asia's premiere jazzman, Terumasa Hino, who invited Tots to join the Asian Jazz Allstars.

Speed, Glue & Shinki was a Japanese psychedelic rock power trio formed in 1970 by guitarist Shinki Chen, and Ikuzo Orita, the president of Polydor Records.

Orita had previously produced an LP featuring Shinki Chen; who was considered the Japanese equivalent of Jimi Hendrix. The self-titled album Shinki Chen featured other notable musicians, including George Yanagi and Masayoshi Kabe. To many in Japan, it is now considered a classic, and is a part of Universal Music's "Naked Line" series of legitimate digitally-remastered reissues. After the release of Shinki Chen's debut solo LP, Orita took over the Japanese division of Atlantic Records and brought Shinki over to the label. Orita formed the trio "Speed, Glue & Shinki" with former Golden Cups bassist Masayoshi Kabe, and Filipino singer-drummer Joey Smith, whom Shinki had discovered performing at a shopping centre in Yokohama. The band took their name from Smith's use of amphetamines, and Kabe's interest of sniffing Pro-Bond glue during the 1960s. Speed, Glue and Shinki released their debut album Eve in 1971, but immediately split up due to mixed reviews, low sales  and as Shinki and Kabe couldn't tolerate Smith's personal life. After they disbanded, a large double-LP was independently released by Smith, titled Speed, Glue & Shinki, which was mostly the work of Joey Smith; sampling guitar recordings of Shinki from previous studio work. However, it also featured two unreleased songs titled Sniffin & Snortin, and Run & Hide which had been recorded for Eve but cut from the final release, as they did not fit the album's overall sound. Thereafter, Shinki took a disliking to recording music, and decided to become a live musician only; which he continues to present day. Kabe continued his own successful music career, while Smith reinvented his stage persona as "Pepe Smith" and returned to the Philippines, where he has become something of a phenomenon with his Pinoy Rock group, Juan Dela Cruz Band.

Singer-recording artist Rafael Centenera has been away for more than three decades, during which he stayed in Malaysia where he was a recording artist of EMI Malaysia and where he met his Malaysian wife, Jenny Hui, a boutique owner and fashion designer.

Although born and raised in the Philippines, it was in Malaysia where Rafael's singing career blossomed.

He recorded three albums in Malaysia, two in English and one in Malay. He sang in clubs and made a name in the entertainment circuit there.

But now that their children have all grown up, Rafael Centenera has returned to the Philippines to share his singing talent once more with his kababayans.

He came home most specifically to record a Tagalog album. "Iba kasi 'pag Tagalog songs ang kinanta mo, you can feel the emotions with your heart. Akala ko nga at my age 'di ko na kayang mag-record pa. But I am physically fit pa naman, so eto ako with my Tagalog album which I dedicate to all Filipino music lovers."

His eponymous album is produced by Vehnee Saturno and released through Viva Records. In the album are six tracks, five of them original compositions of Saturno himself. These are "Sumayaw Ng Salsa," a duet with Ms. Pilita Corrales; "Bakit Ikaw," "Andrea," "Basta't Ikaw," "Sa Kanya Ba?" and "Ako Pa Rin Sa Iyo" (this was Rafael's hit single "Missing You" in Malaysia in the '80s which Vehnee translated into Tagalog and which is the album's carrier single).

Rafael has high esteem and respect for Vehnee whom he met when the former was promoting an album he recorded in Malaysia which a Filipino recording company distributed in the Philippines. Back then, Vehnee wasn't the successful composer that he is now. Rafael ended up as first to record a Vehnee Saturno song, "Ang Dahilan," which he recorded before Vehnee's compositions "Be My Lady" and "Sandakot Na Lupa" made him a household name.

Rafael realized now that Tagalog songs are really different in conveying messages and feelings. The songs in his comeback album prove his point. "Iba ang songs in our own dialect or language. We can project and play more on our culture and traditions."
