Richard Tann of the popular ‘70s combo group Circus Band, passed away Saturday morning due to heart attack.

Richard started the Circus Band in 1969 with Basil Valdez, Hajji Alejandro, Pabs Dadivas, Jerry Paraiso, Walter Calinawan, Tillie Moreno, Jacqui Magno, Pat Castillo, and Ana Marie Santos. Some songs that were popularized by the group include "The Harder I Try," "People Got To Save The World," "Honky Tonk Woman," and "There’s No Love In The Room" among others.

When one says Circus Band, it’s normally a collective noun for the best singers in the country whose voices are rare and unduplicated to this day. Each member of the group has his and her own style but Richard is most remembered for his beautiful rendition of a Dionne Warwick original titled "I Always Get Caught Up In The Rain," a staple in all Circus Band shows.

Upon hitting the ‘80s, Richard tried his luck as a solo artist dabbling in jazz fusion with Circus Band’s pianist Gerry Paraiso who wrote most of the songs that Richard performed.

Richard was a regular must-see jazz performer in music lounges at the time but it was when he did the vocals for the Hallmark Card jingle written by Gryk Ortaleza that he really made his mark in the music industry.

From being a performer, Richard started his own business afterwards. He was the proprietor of Nicotina Garden Pavilion, a hub in Roxas Boulevard that features Filipino cultural dances.
