In the late ’70s, versatile jazz singer Jacqui Magno had nearly given up singing for good after a rift with her erstwhile manager. She was then the frontliner of the Batucada Band, which used to perform at Hyatt’s Calesa Bar, one of the more popular night haunts in Manila.
However, quitting wasn’t Jacqui’s fate at that time. Birds of the Same Feathers, a jazz haven in Quezon City that opened in 1978, sought out Jacqui and pulled her out of Calesa Bar.
“I got a call from someone representing Birds and asked me if I wanted to sing there,” Jacqui recalls.
Jacqui agreed to perform at Birds on her own terms.
“I opened Birds of the Same Feathers with the Sticky Band composed of Boy Katindig, Rudy Lozano, Paco Gamboa and I think Walter Calinawan was the drummer at that time. We also had a trumpet player, Boy Capili. The group was practically a fragment of Circus Band.”
After some months of singing at Birds, Jacqui took a break and later joined Ananda Marga. She went on to become a missionary yogi nun.
“When I left the organization after five years, Birds was renovated and became bigger. The name was also changed to Birdland.”
Jacqui will always have fond memories of Birdland, especially of its owner Serafin Pua and the gang who frequented the popular jazz joint.
Birdland regulars at that time consisted of actors, directors, musicians, radio DJs, politicians and even prominent people who were all self-confessed jazz lovers – Noynoy Aquino, siblings Bongbong and Irene Marcos, Mary Ann Gomez, Pinky Valdez, Gayle Yabut, Veana Fores, Nadine Albert, Imma Venus, Nini Diaz, Paola Luz, Leo Martinez, Leo Rialp, Mitch Valdes, Jackie Dayrit and her sister Michelle, Bembol Rocco, Ricky Davao, Aga Muhlach and Nora Aunor.
