Tadao Hayashi is a famous Japanese harpist.
For almost six years, Hayashi, who became a popular harpist in Japan and the Philippines by playing classicial and jazz music for almost two decades, had to live a simple and modest life after his fame and fortune started to fade.

Hayashi, 62, was found dead inside his bedroom on a Monday morning in Caloocan City.

Antonio Clet, Hayashi’s personal assistant for 13 years, said the famous Japanese musician first arrived in the country in 1979. Hayashi was charmed by the hospitality of the Filipinos which prompted him to stay, making several jazz albums and playing at major hotels. Clet was a production assistant at the SRO Productions that produced shows and record albums of Hayashi.

“Before, Tadao was so popular that he was always fully booked. People loved his music and wanted to see him perform live in concert. Sometimes, he played in first-class hotels and I always accompanied him because he did not know how to speak Tagalog then,” Clet said.

“He loved to play. He staged a lot of live concerts and sometimes, he played for big people in big hotels. His recording career was also earning him fame and fortune and people love him,” Clet said.

Among Hayashi’s songs and albums were “Wave,” “Christmas à la Tadao,” “Standing Room Only,” “Tadao’s Christmas Wish,” Best of Tadao Hayashi, and his tribute to Filipino composers OPM Special, Maraming Salamat Po, Tadao and Harping on Pop.

Hayashi had rented a cozy apartment in San Bartolome, Quezon City, for P10,000 a month until his popularity waned and he was forced to give up the apartment and buy a house and live at LD Village, a low-cost housing project of the National Housing Authority (NHA) near the Tala Leprosarium in 1996.

Hayashi was a Japanese citizen and used Clet as a dummy to acquire the rights for the NHA lot.

“Tadao spent a lot for the house. That was the time he is no longer getting any offer. He used his remaining savings for the construction of his dream house because he told me that he can no longer pay for the rent of his apartment,” Clet said.

Hayashi’s only source of income was his pension coming from Japan and remittances coming from his relatives in Japan.

“I pity him. He sold his van, then asked his driver and servants to find other jobs while he’s not getting any offer to play harp,” he said.

Just as he was about to give up his career last month, Hayashi received a call from executives of SRO Production (now named First Name Enterprises) offering him to play for Dusit Hotel in Makati City. Hayashi and his harp was back in business and started to perform again in public since June 12.

The was only for one month, but because Hayashi started to attract people, Sandra Garcia, Dusit Hotel marketing director, decided to extend Hayashi’s contract.

But the break he had waited for so long ended abruptly last Sunday when his alleged lover killed and robbed him inside his house in Caloocan.

Japanese embassy representatives brought his remains yesterday to the Manila Memorial Park for cremation. Relatives of the victim were scheduled to fly back to Japan today with the ashes of the late musician.
